Sharing malts in Autumn is a treat to enjoy while the days are still warm. Delgadillo’s Snow Cap in Seligman, Arizona is the place to stop for a fun Route 66 ice-cream break. The place will trick you before you make it to the counter to order. My husband pulled the door handle to go in. Nothing happened. He pulled the wrong handle. There are two, one on each side of the door. The service is hilarious. The malts are great. We left full of malts and of laughter.
According to reviews of Delgadillo’s cafe, anything you order from their kitchen is good. We ordered a Root Beer Freeze Malt and an Oreo Malt and shared so we could try both flavors.
It had been years since I had treated myself to a malt. I was sure that by the time I made it back home my scales would tip upward from the malt calories. How surprised I was when the scales showed the same thing they did before I went on my Route 66 road trip. It was worth the malt!
The weird thing is I’ve never liked Root Beer, but I like Root Beer floats. The first time I ever remember the mention of the soda was on an occasion with my mother. We were in Lufkin, Texas at a barbecue carhop drive-in. I was about four years old. Mother ordered our sandwiches and “cokes” as we called all sodas back then. When she ordered hers, it was a Root Beer. I was horrified but kept quiet until the carhop walked away. “Mother!” I exclaimed.
“You ordered beer.”
She laughed so hard she wasn’t able to talk. Finally, she explained that it wasn’t a beer like I thought. I didn’t know anything about beer. My family didn’t drink it. Daddy was a preacher. Probably, I had heard him preach about the downside of drinking beer.
I do love Root Beer Floats, so I asked the gentleman taking my order at the Seligman cafe what the difference was between a Root Beer Float (they have those, too) and a Root Beer Freeze Malt. He said the malt was thicker and had more ice cream in it. Hmmm. Sounded good to me. It was delicious.
