Kitchen Southern Hospitality’s Top 10 Recipes of 2019

Thank you, my blog reader friends, for subscribing to and reading my Kitchen Southern Hospitality blog.

When I looked at the top ten recipes of last year, there was also another category – the top blog posts. Most of them are included here because they are recipes. However, one post that did not include a recipe was about a truck road trip with places to see and eat at. If you’re a truck driver (or the wife of one) who drives in Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Texas, you may want to read that blog post.

Your Needs

Those of you who cook for one or two, I’ve listened to your need for suggestions on recipes.

Women who work all day and commute, I understand how important it is for you to have more quick, easy, and simple recipes.

Work-at-home-wives, moms, and grandmas, I’ve considered your need for meal menus as well.

You see, I was the busy mom teaching my child homeschool. I’ve worked in a corporate office with a long drive back and forth mornings and afternoons. Now I’m a busy stay-at-home wife, mom, grand-mom and food blogger (and loving it).

Let me mention that my heart is drawn to loving others by showing them hospitality. I do that through cooking comfort foods, delicious recipes, and preparing meals for loved ones.

Hospitality

Hospitality is shown by serving guests at home. But hospitality is also preparing a meal and taking it to someone. And sharing my recipes and special ways to make your day better brings me great joy. Happy New Year to you, my friend.

And now, here are the top ten 2019 recipes:

Ribeye in a Slow Cooker

Ribeye steak came in first on the top ten most popular recipes list at Kitchen Southern Hospitality (KSH). In fact, three ribeye recipes made it on the 2019 top ten list.

I think it’s obvious that I love ribeye steaks. In fact, I consider it a comfort food in my household. Even when I eat at a steak restaurant, ribeye is my first choice.

For example, my husband Greg and I dined out on our 41st anniversary on December 29, 2019 – and you guessed it. We celebrated with grilled ribeye steak. He chose bone-in, and I ordered a ten-ounce without the bone. I tried his steak, and he tried mine. The best quality is the large steak with the bone, no doubt about it.

Summertime is great for grilling steaks. But if it’s a cold day or raining, you’re busy, or you simply prefer not to grill, slow cooker steaks could be an option for you.

Cooking a steak in a slow cooker can be tricky as far as getting it tender enough. I like to wrap mine in foil and add baked potatoes when cooking the steak in my slow cooker.

My husband is a professional driver, and he has cooked steaks many times in his slow cooker. I’ve gone on road trips with him and eaten the steaks, and they are real tender. Do give it a try.

Ribeye Steak in a Pressure Cooker

Ribeye steak in a pressure cooker (a recipe including mushrooms) was the second most popular recipe on this blog last year.

Pressure cooking a steak is for the person who needs a quick meal  It is easy to overcook the ribeye in the pressure cooker.

Be sure to read your appliance’s instructions for steak recipes. Times may vary, depending on the brand. The type I have is a Farberware, and I love it.

It would be best to undercook your steak rather than overcooking it. If it’s not done as much as you like, cook it a few minutes longer.

Slow Cooker Pork Riblets Dinner for Two

Pork Riblets came in second, another slow cooker recipe. Over the Christmas holidays, I heard someone talking about how difficult it is to cook for two.

When you’re used to cooking for you, your husband, and your children, it’s difficult to adapt when the kids marry or move out on their own. All of a sudden, your fridge is filling up with leftovers. It’s like you have to learn how to cook all over again. This slow cooker riblet dinner is for you if you like ribs and your family has downsized to just two of you.

Flexitarian: Part-Time Vegetarian Diet

This flexitarian dish is an egg bagel breakfast. As you can tell by now, I like meat. On the other hand, I don’t eat meat every day – and I like eggs for any meal of the day.

Occasionally, I will cut out beef from my menu for a while. My dad told me once, “A person doesn’t need to eat meat every day.” He was a stickler for keeping his weight under control by eating healthy and exercising.

Southern Black-Eyed Peas with Sausage

This Southern black-eyed peas recipe not only was one of the top recipes of 2019. It was also the most popular recipe on this blog on January 1, 2020.

That sausage, incidentally, makes the recipe taste delicious.

Black-eyed peas is believed by many to be a good luck food choice for the beginning of the year. For me, it’s a comfort food that I’ve been raised with in East Texas. Topped off with good old-fashioned chow-chow (it’s a Texas thing, y’all), and I’m downright happy.

Stove-Top Roasted Brussels Sprouts

Roasted Brussels sprouts, especially this particular one, is one of the best ways to cook this vegetable.

Usually, I boil this veggie. But you have to be careful when boiling it. If you let it cook too long, it turns to mush. And if that’s the way it turns out the first time you try Brussels sprouts, you may never want to eat it again. This roasted recipe is the way to go. Delicious.

Slow Cooker Squash Casserole

Squash is my favorite vegetable. My mother cooked yellow summer squash the best.

Baked Squash Casserole

The first vegetable casserole I ever learned how to cook was with squash. When I cooked it in the slow cooker, I  actually was surprised at how good it turned out. My husband and brother were my recipe tasters, and they had seconds. I knew then it was a winner.

Mesquite-Tea Easy Ribeye Slow Cooker Meal

And here’s the third ribeye recipe in the ten most popular foods on KSH for 2019. The mesquite-tea flavor tastes wonderful. And cooking ribeye steaks in a slow cooker is a simple way to cook it.

My husband and I liked the way this steak turned out (although our favorite ribeyes at home are the ones he grills). Nonetheless, we both have had great success cooking ribeye steaks in a slow cooker.

When Greg grills our steaks, he often uses mesquite wood over charcoal. So when we discovered the bottle of mesquite-tea at an H.E.B., we didn’t hesitate to buy it.

Pressure Cooker Red Beans Recipe

You know you’re a Southerner when your dinner is a pot of red beans and cornbread. This is an easy meal. Help yourself to a salad on the side if you wish to add some veggies along with the red beans.

Shrimp Cabbage Scampi

Shrimp Cabbage Scampi – the tenth on the most popular recipes list – is an excellent cabbage dish, one of my favorites. And it’s a meal in itself.

Cast Iron Shrimp Scampi

I’ve always loved the shrimp scampi entrees I’ve ordered at various restaurants. But when I came up with this incredible-tasting shrimp and cabbage mix, I knew this would be one of my own top veggie favorites to continue serving in my home kitchen.

This cast iron meal has been personally tested by relatives who have loved it. You’ve gotta try this.

And there you have it – the ten most popular Kitchen Southern Hospitality recipes of 2019.

Now it’s 2020, the beginning of another year to serve family and friends, showing them hospitality with comfort foods and favorite recipes.
