How do you make a dump cake?

Basically, you need three ingredients – cake mix, butter, and a can of fruit. However, there are plenty of dump cake possibilities.Start with a yellow or white cake mix. If you don’t have a can of fruit, try pie filling. Dump cake recipes are mostly easy and quick to make. Of course, you could make it easy on yourself and order a cookbook for quick dump cakes if improvising recipes is not your forte.

What goes in a chocolate dump cake?

That depends on if you like your chocolate cake smooth and gooey or chunky with a bunch of nuts.

For this recipe, I started with a box of Devil’s Food Chocolate Cake Mix.

Strawberries and cherries go well with chocolate, but neither seemed very appealing to me.. But I discovered a few toppings that would work just fine. Pecans, walnuts, chocolate morsels and coconut flakes. Nothing more was needed to convince me. In a short time, my chocolate dump cake was baked.

I found a chocolate dump cake recipe that looks very good made by Snappy Gourmet. She suggests a wonderful idea of melting butter in a baking pan in the oven while it’s preheating. Fantastic idea! I tried this, and it works great. Adding the butter to a dump cake is easier melting it this way rather than cutting a stick of butter into thin slices and adding them to the top of the cake. And it’s less time consuming.

This Chocolate Dump Cake has a brownie-like texture and is both gooey and chunky. Great flavor.

Here’s the recipe (Incidentally, it turned out really good!):

Recipe Notes

If you had to go buy all the ingredients at once for this recipe, it would cost approximately $15. I had all of the ingredients on hand. If you don’t have some of the ingredients, feel free to improvise and save a few dollars.

About the Recipe

As mentioned, I had walnuts and pecans on hand for this recipe but decided not to add them. If you prefer a more chunky chocolate dessert over gooey, add chopped nuts. The carob chips used in this recipe are made by Chatfield’s which I ordered through Amazon.
