I had no idea how good this steak-in-a-slow-cooker experiment was going to be. It only takes four hours on high. Double the time if you need it to cook all day.

Sear or Not to Sear?

I used to think you had to sear all kinds of meat before cooking in a slow cooker. But I was wrong.

Maybe searing first is best. Perhaps some meats cook and taste better when searing is done before cooking in the slow cooker like pork chops.

I’ve cooked ribeye steaks in the slow cooker without searing and they turned out great. And though it’s fine if you sear steaks before putting them in the slow cooker, it’s okay not to.

Searing in Pressure Cookers

I do sear ribeye steaks in my pressure cooker. My pressure cooker has a searing/roast mode I use.

First, I sear the steaks with the lid open for about ten minutes. Then I close and lock the lid to finish cooking the steaks.

Searing in Cast Iron Pans

Occasionally, I sear ribeyes in an iron skillet before cooking them in the pressure cooker. Other times I sear them in the cast iron skillet and also cook them in the same pan.

Cooking Ribeyes in the Slow Cooker

I had never tried cooking ribeyes in the slow cooker, but circumstances changed the course of dinner plans one day. My husband asked me to thaw two ribeyes we had in the freezer and he would grill them. I thawed and marinated them in the refrigerator.

Hubs asked if there was another way I could cook the steaks. I could easily fit them into the 30-day slow cooker recipes plan I had going at the time. Honestly, I wasn’t sure how they would turn out but was willing to go for it.

It turned out that my experiment of steaks cooked in the slow cooker with sweet potatoes was successful.

Hint on Cooking Ribeyes in the Slow Cooker

Foil is the key to cooking ribeyes in the slow cooker. I’ve used foil before in the slow cooker but not a lot. I decided on cooking steaks and sweet potatoes together in the slow cooker.

The Steak was Juicy and Tender

When I first tested the ribeyes after cooking for four hours, the steak was juicy and tender.  I added barbecue sauce and cooked the ribeye steaks another hour. They turned out good.

The steaks tasted so delicious in their natural juice. Therefore, another option is turn the slow cooker off at four hours without adding barbecue sauce.

Sweet Tea Seasoning

Like Southern sweet tea? Down South, we like to keep a gallon of sweet tea in the fridge handy at all times. Make it sweet with regular granulated sugar or a sugar substitute.

There’s nothing like a glass of sweet iced tea on a hot day. Iced tea at least for Southerners means a glass full of ice. You can even order K-cup machine compatible sweet iced tea packets.

Other Marinade Option

If you’re not a Texas resident and can’t find Vela Farms Texas Sweet Tea Marinade, look for Smokin’ Sweet Tea. This is a naturally flavored marinade by McCormick Grill Mates, and it can be ordered from Amazon.

Another idea hubs and I discussed was putting the steaks on the grill after cooking in the slow cooker. You may want to try that as well. Take them out of the slow cooker and grill for five minutes or less to add a smoked flavor.

Have you tried cooking ribeyes in the slow cooker? If so, let me know how you cooked yours.

Double-Loaf Yeast Bread – Don’t you love to eat steak at a restaurant where a loaf of bread with butter is served before the meal? It’s hard to resist eating all of it and asking for more.

This yeast bread is made with lactose-free milk. Serve with a sizzling ribeye off the grill.

  1. I haven’t had the best experiences with good cuts of meat in the slow cooker, but I have never tried the foil method before. Did you add any water to the slow cooker?
