Making Pancakes with Grandchildren

Grandchildren and Pancakes

Want to have fun with your grandchildren in the kitchen? Put them to work. They’ll love it. Choose pancakes to make with them. They can stir the ingredients you’ve added to a bowl and pour the pancake mixture onto a griddle.

I made a stack of pancakes with small squares of eggs for my two little granddaughters. The three-year-old loved pouring the mix onto the griddle.

Sometimes you can get little ones to eat things (like eggs) they won’t normally eat if you make it fun. A Pinterest picture of a stack of pancakes gave me an idea. Stack egg squares around the pancakes.

It worked! They ate at least two or three egg squares. I knew the pancake stack would disappear quickly. The girls do love their bread (hmm, wonder where they got that from).

Pancake Toppers

Use any of these options for pancake toppers:

  • blueberries and whipped topping
  • strawberries and strawberry syrup – Check out Laura Fuentes’ Better Than IHOP’s Strawberry Syrup Recipe.
  • pecan syrup topping – I make a French toast recipe with pecans. The pecans and syrup could be adapted perfectly as well for pancakes.
  • peanut butter and syrup (or honey)
  • just butter – Try this…leave out the syrup, heat butter in the microwave, drizzle it on top of the pancakes and pour all around the pancakes on the plate.
  • a breakfast sausage link – Put a link on top of each pancake, roll it up, and hold it together with a toothpick. Dip it in syrup. Fun and yummy!

Pancakes make a delicious breakfast at home or at a restaurant. Recently, IHOP had a 98-cent promotion on  their short stack. My daughter and I took the girls for brunch. The restaurant wasn’t crowded at all. We ate short stacks and had some left over for breakfast the next morning.

What’s your favorite pancake topping? Want to share? I just might try it out! 🙂

  1. My favorite thing to do is to add things to the batter. Sliced bananas and chopped nuts are good additions. I really like to add bacon pieces and serve the pancakes topped with an egg. It sounds like you are having lots of fun with your grandchildren.

I love the idea of topping pancakes with an egg and adding bacon pieces! Bananas and chopped nuts are great ideas, too. Yes, it’s fun being with the grandchildren.
